Hot off the presses! We’ve just received the February 15th Environmental Committee Agenda, which includes the 2024 Environmental Committee Work Plan. This plan outlines major priorities for the year, such as decarbonizing the built environment, ensuring resilient infrastructure, fostering clean communities, and advancing ambitious climate goals. Coincidentally, ReWild addresses all these priorities, and we are extremely grateful to our council members for including expanded wetlands in their work plan. We’re excited about what this year holds for the planning process.Â
However, our work is not done yet. The Environmental Committee has prioritized reviewing and advancing plans for the De Anza Natural Project. A huge thank you to everyone who submitted priorities for wetland restoration! Additionally, we extend our gratitude to Council President Pro Tem LaCava for his impactful remarks at Love Your Wetlands Day and for emphasizing the importance of restoration during King Tides in January.
Join us on Thursday, February 15th, to thank the committee and its members for their involvement in the plan over the past several years. We are excited to be on the cusp of restoring wetlands, but we still have some things to address. We are still advocating to see improvements for the De Anza Natural Plan at the Environmental Committee meeting in March —that’s their role! We hope the committee will achieve the Wildest acreage goals, set a timeline that ensures speedy restoration, and requires the creation of soft shorelines.
The committee is eager to meet its number one goal this year of achieving ambitious climate goals, and we have an excellent opportunity to make that happen. Fortunately, the Wildest acreage plan will help meet the Climate Action Plan goals of restoring tidal marsh, in addition to increasing coastal resilience, sequestering carbon, and improving water quality in the bay. The goals of the Environmental Committee show that wetlands are in our future, and they’re closer than ever!
Join us in making public comments in person at council chambers on Thursday at 1PM, submit comments on Agenda Item 5: Environment Committee 2024 Work Plan. We hope the committee will achieve the Wildest acreage goals, set a timeline that ensures speedy restoration, and support the creation of soft shorelines.
For the Future of Our Wetlands,
The ReWild Team
